- Colon and rectal cancer (CRC) remains a major cause of cancer mortality in older adults, and dietary factors are important, potentially preventable contributors. Here, we assessed nationwide trends in CRC mortality and dietary risk-attributable burden among Japanese adults aged ≥60 years from 2010 to 2023. CRC deaths rose from 48,208 in 2010 to 70,327 in 2023, and the death rate increased from 12…

- Falls prevention interventions for community-dwelling older adults: systematic review and meta-analysis of benefits, harms, and patient values and preferences. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: To prevent falls among community-dwelling older adults, evidence is most certain for benefit, at least over 1-2 years, from supervised, long-duration balance/resistance and group Tai Chi interventions, whole-body vibration, high-intensity/dose education or cognitive-behavioral therapy, and interventions of comprehensive multifactorial assessment with targeted treatment plus HHA, HHA plus exercise, or education provided to everyone. Adding other interventions to exercise does not appear to substantially increase benefits. Overall, effects appear most applicable to those with elevated fall risk. Choice among effective interventions that are available may best depend on individual patient preferences, though when implementing new balance/resistance programs delivering individual over group sessions when feasible may be most acceptable. Data on more patient-important outcomes including fall-related fractures and adverse effects would be beneficial, as would studies focusing on equity-deserving populations and on programs delivered virtually.

- Strategies to improve smoking cessation rates in primary care. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: There is moderate-certainty evidence that providing adjunctive counseling by an allied health professional, cost-free smoking cessation medications, and tailored printed materials as part of smoking cessation support in primary care can increase the number of people who achieve smoking cessation. There is no clear evidence that providing participants with biomedical risk feedback, or primary care providers with training or incentives to provide smoking cessation support enhance quit rates. However, we rated this evidence as of low or very low certainty, and so conclusions are likely to change as further evidence becomes available. Most of the studies in this review evaluated smoking cessation interventions that had already been extensively tested in the general population. Further studies should assess strategies designed to optimize the delivery of those interventions already known to be effective within the primary care setting. Such studies should be cluster-randomized to account for the implications of implementation in this particular setting. Due to substantial variation between studies in this review, identifying optimal characteristics of multicomponent interventions to improve the delivery of smoking cessation treatment was challenging. Future research could use component network meta-analysis to investigate this further.

- CONCLUSIONS: In active tuberculosis case-finding in our community setting, the combination of CAD followed by CRP testing offered no advantage over CAD alone owing to its inferior case yield and higher cost. CAD alone, however, has the potential to be an effective and economically viable tuberculosis screening strategy in areas with high disease burden.

- Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) as cardiovascular risk modifiers in obstructive sleep apnea and obesity: a real-world study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: GLP-1RAs were associated with reduced risks of heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, AMI, and death from all causes in obese OSA patients. Prospective studies are needed for validation. GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have shown promising potential in reducing cardiovascular risk and alleviating the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the impact of GLP-1RAs on cardiovascular events specifically in patients with OSA. With 3 years of follow-up, the GLP-1RAs reduced newly developed heart failure by 24%, pulmonary hypertension by 33%, acute myocardial infarction by 24%, and death by 43%, with notable early separation in heart failure and all-cause mortality. This finding supports the potential for broader use of GLP-1RAs in this population, not only to improve OSA severity, but also to reduce cardiovascular risk.

- CONCLUSIONS: Under simulated bruxism conditions, maxillary overdentures supported by 4 regular-diameter implants demonstrated the most favorable biomechanical behavior. Both PMMA and PEEK overdentures showed limited fatigue endurance, emphasizing the importance of implant distribution and maintenance in patients with bruxism.

- CONCLUSIONS: GLP-1RA use was associated with a lower risk of pulmonary complications including acute respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, and COPD as well as lower ED visits and inpatient admissions compared to other diabetes medications. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the benefits of GLP-1RA.

- Background/Objectives: The thermal stability and degradation kinetics of β-lactam antibiotics are critical for understanding their behavior under processing and storage conditions. This study investigates the thermal decomposition of meropenem, ceftriaxone sodium, and cefazolin sodium in order to evaluate their kinetic parameters, assess the presence of the compensation effect, and determine isok…

- A Comprehensive Overview on Bioutilization of Marine Byssal Protein: Chemistry, Characterization, and Biomedical Applications. [Review]J Biomater Sci Polym Ed. 2026 Jun 23; :1-31. [Online ahead of print]JB
- Marine molluscs produce a class of proteinaceous materials, byssal proteins that possess unique mechanical and adhesive properties. In this sense, the extraordinary adhesion of mussel byssal proteins is inspiring a new class of surgical glues and sealants designed to perform in wet, dynamic physiological environments. Beyond their performance, these materials represent a sustainable and biodegrad…

- When attention falters: Brain, breathing, and behavioral signals of lapses in interoceptive attention. [Journal Article]
- Mind‑body practices, such as meditation and yoga, involve paying attention to breathing sensations. During these practices, individuals report "interoceptive lapses," moments when attention drifts away from internal bodily sensations. While lapses in attention to the external world have been widely studied, little is known about the physiological and neural mechanisms of interoceptive lapses. Int…

- Diagnosis and Management of a Rare Splenic Cyst. [Journal Article]Ann Afr Med. 2026 Jun 19. [Online ahead of print]AA
- Splenic cysts are rare and are often detected incidentally or until the cyst reaches a certain size, causing clinical symptoms. They are classified into primary (true) and secondary (false) splenic cysts. False cysts often pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their nonspecific clinical presentation and overlapping imaging features with true cysts. Here, we present the case of a 36-ye…

- Automatic segmentation using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has become a key tool in musculoskeletal imaging, offering substantial reductions in processing time. However, concerns about reliability often necessitate manual inspection and correction. We present a method that leverages network-derived uncertainty to automatically identify and localise segmentation errors, reducing the need fo…

- Management of the undescended testis in children: An American Pediatric Surgical Association Outcomes and Evidence Based Practice Committee Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Pre-operative imaging and hormonal therapy are generally not recommended except in specific circumstances. Testicular growth and potential for fertility improves when orchiopexy is performed before one year of age. For a palpable testis, a single incision approach is preferred over a two-incision orchiopexy. Laparoscopic orchiopexy is associated with a slightly lower testicular atrophy rate but a higher rate of long-term testicular retraction. One and two-stage Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy have similar rates of testicular atrophy and retraction. There is a higher relative risk of testicular cancer in UDT which may be lessened by pre-pubertal orchiopexy.

- Nitric oxide increases endocervical secretion at the ovulatory phase in the female. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
